The downside of presence

On my quest to dare question the self-help genre and spiritual speakers, it has now become time to question even Eckhart Tolle. We know him as the Master of Presence, of learning to be more aware in the now. This has been marketed as the truth, and what we all should strive for. But, is it always the right thing to do, to be?


No, it isn't.

When you live in bad conditions, a harsh environment, or among hurtful people, that feels traumatic to you, you don't want to feel it. And why should you? You simply need to ignore some of the pain, to endure it. And why not? Why not dream, visualise and plan for a better future? Why not reminisce about your past glory with loving memories? Why not let yourself be standing with one foot in the past and one in the future?


We all learn this way. To be fully present in a trauma, such as torture or abuse, would simply just make you feel worse. Instead, we must cultivate strength, patience and compassion.
