Listening on the third level

Updated: Sep 2, 2023

To be a professional life coach, requires the practice of listening to our clients on the third level. This is taught in Co-Active Coaching and is something I've studied. What does this mean and what can you expect or even demand from a session with a professional life coach?

To listen on the third level, means that I not only listen to what you are saying, but also how you are saying it and why. I put myself a little aside and focus solemnly on you, my client, with an open, neutral and curious approach. I notice any shifts in your body language or your tone of voice, as well as any pauses, sighs or emerging emotions. Not only what feels heavy or sad, but what lifts you up and let your eyes sparkle. All these things constitute your communication and make up a total impression.

At the end of my coaching session, I share a summary of what I've heard you say and how, for you to either acknowledge your own impression or change anything that might have been misunderstood or became communicated in a way you wish you hadn't. This too is part of coaching, as it prepares you and enables you to improve your communication also with others, whether in your personal relationships or on the job. The summary leads to a conclusion on the topic of the day with a proposed suggestion to act further on, which I follow up our next time, two weeks later.

The best way is to try for yourself! Contact me for a free introductory coaching session, either in person, by phone, or by Zoom. I coach in Swedish and in US English.
